Nestled among pines and heather, Klitmøller Hideaway offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
In an often busy and digital everyday life, the house invites a slower rhythm – a place to reconnect, restore balance, to be together, and to rediscover the quiet presence of one another.
Designed to bring the landscape into everyday life, it embraces the surrounding nature through framed views, shifting daylight, and the tactile warmth of natural materials.

Every room opens toward the surrounding forest and dunes, while the courtyard provides intimacy and shelter. The architecture follows a biophilic approach, seeking to strengthen the connection between people and their natural environment. The changing light, the scent of wood, and the sound of the wind all become part of the experience.

A glimpse inside Klitmøller Hideaway
The architecture
The house is carefully placed on a plot with many old pine trees and vegetation. When placing the house on the site we spend a lot of time finding the right spot so as few trees as possible would have to be cut down. All building materials are brought in by hand in our attempt to preserve as much of the vegetation as possible.
The house is laid out as a longhouse, with the central section offset. This allows for a west-oriented terrasse that gets shelter from the wind and it makes way for even more windows towards the north and south from the living room. In the offset central section, there is a kitchen and living room as one large, high-ceilinged space. At each end of the house, there is a bedroom and a bathroom.
The house is designed to be versatile and flexible, accommodating both a couple and a larger family gathering. This functional range is achieved through thoughtful space planning and the integration of furniture into the architecture.
The house is among the four finalists for the Thisted Municipality Architecture Award 2024.

The details of Klitmøller Hideaway
Klitmøller Hideaway is shaped by its surrounding landscape – the dunes, the light, the wind, and the forest edge. Built primarily from untreated timber, the house will age naturally into its setting, much like the weathered fishermen’s huts along the coast.
Every material has been chosen for its honesty and ability to endure the local climate. The architecture seeks simplicity and calm, offering a place to retreat, reconnect, and experience the nature of Thy from within.

The materials
Klitmøller Hideaway is designed with a clean and simple material palette, focusing on the site’s natural beauty rather than unnecessary luxury. Materials for the house are sourced locally and generally used biodegradable materials if possible. All wood for the roof and the facades are grown in Denmark and cut at a local saw mill. The windows are from the nearby window factory. All bricks used outside are from the local Helligsø Brickworks.
We have used a special foundation method that minimized the amount of concrete. The house is actually floating on top of the ground. The interior is clad with pine plywood, creating a warm and cohesive atmosphere.

Award-winning team behind
Klitmøller Hideaway was designed by Spant Studio, an award-winning Danish architecture practice known for its work with context, craft, and natural materials. The house continues the studio’s exploration of how architecture can engage quietly with its surroundings while offering warmth, precision, and human scale.
In 2025, the project was nominated for the Thisted Municipality Architecture Award, given every five years to celebrate buildings that contribute to the region’s architectural identity and quality.

Testimonials
Alex, 22.05.2025
The north-facing room, which feels like a caravan in the middle of nowhere is our bedroom.
We didn’t realise there was a dune landscape just behind the house. When we arrived last Friday, the first thing we did (in the rain) was go for a walk in the dunes, which was simply marvellous.
We enjoy going for long walks on the beach and in the woods. Despite the unexpectedly warm weather, we enjoy relaxing in the sauna.”
